These are gatherings of the women within our group. A chance for us to have our own time and space in amongst nature, letting go of everyday structure and reconnecting with; ourselves, our community and the earth. In practical terms these sessions involve guided dancing and meditation.
There's never a weather that's not suitable to train in, it's all about how you dress for the occasion.
There are benefits of note to continued training in winter months. The light hitting your skin and the back of your eyes, reaching your hypothalamus, helps us better synch with our circadian rhythm. This can influence how well we adjust to the shorter days and longer nights as the seasons change, helping to alleviate the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Circadian rhythm is a biological clock found in all creatures. It tells important physiological systems, such as, hormone secretion to switch on or off. It is also central to the optimal function of our metabolism and the quality of our sleep/wake states. Our master circadian clock is found in the hypothalamus (centre of our brain, behind our eyes). If our circadian rhythm is not functioning well it can effect many areas of our physical and mental wellbeing. One of the easiest ways to initiate a healthy circadian rhythm is through natural sunlight. It is postulated that improving circadian rhythm through increased contact with sunlight can improve mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression and SAD.
Modern society leads us away from a healthy circadian rhythm through shift work, late nights, burning the candle at both ends etc.
Its is probably better understood if you reflect to the last time you crossed times zones on a holiday. Jet lag!
Shift work patterns have now even been added to the list of carcinogens by the world health organisation.
So, in short, your circadian rhythm, although not widely discussed, is super important.
